Heirloom Seeds

Grow the best tasting varieties!
Break out of the Monsanto Monopoly on Seeds, and avoid growing their Frankenfoods. If you read about Monsanto out on the web you'll realize what a stranglehold they have on our food supply. Anything we can do to break away from their monoculture and genetic manipulation of our food supply is good for the planet!
How? Use Heirloom Seeds! Biodiversity is important for the health of our ecosystem. Promoting biodiversity by preserving and planting heirloom varieties is the best defense against the Monsanto Monoculture.
There are other advantages to fruits and veggies grown from heirloom seed
- Food tastes better
- Plants are better adapted to the climate where they're grown
- There are a lot more varieties available
- After growing, you can harvest your own seeds and save them for next season (seeds from commercial varieties are often sterile)
- Plants will, in most cases, need less water
- Pollen from heirloom plant varieties are better for our bees and other pollinators
- Open pollination ensures that plants will be even more biodiverse, since natural selection will happen naturally
The best source for heirloom seeds is local suppliers, since they will stock seed varieties that are best for your region, and have evolved natural traits to allow them to thrive. These suppliers may be hard to find. Ask at your mom and pop hardware stores, join local gardening groups, and seek out your county extension service to find these folks. Also see if there are Sustainability groups in your area. Our local sustainability group has a seed exchange early every spring.
If you absolutely positively can't find local suppliers, then you can look to the online suppliers such as The Landreth Seed Company, Seed Savers Exchange, Heirloom Seeds, and The Good Seed Company. There are many others. Try to find a supplier who is in your general region, if possible.
